When used properly, scouting cameras can be excellent tools for revealing the bucks on a particular property and giving you insights into their patterns.

LOCATING MR. BIG WITH CAMERAS

As shown by Larry Kline’s success, trail cameras can be powerful and beneficial tools. That is, assuming they are quality units and used properly.

I have no doubt that any deer has the potential to be trained to accept a flash and noisy camera as harmless. Some don’t even seem to care the first time they experience an up-close photo session with these potentially harmful units. However, some mature bucks have no tolerance for anything out of the norm and won’t stick around for the training session. Though they most likely won’t abandon the area, they are apt to avoid the location where the camera is set. I’ve seen this firsthand.

When choosing a scouting camera, I look for several features. First, above all else, it must be quiet. Camera noise is unacceptable. Next is reliability. If I’m going to base decisions on what a camera reports, it better not misfire or miss shots. That also encompasses the triggering time. A second may not seem to be much time, but if it takes that long to snap a photo, an amazingly high number of rear-end shots will be the result. Though one can easily argue both sides of whether a standard flash scares deer, I prefer an infrared flash. It has the ability to capture more readable night photos at a distance, and is undetectable to deer. Finally, I can’t even imagine ever using a film-based scouting camera again. Digital is simply so much easier, faster and cheaper than having to develop film.
